Tiger’s Nest Hike: The Complete Guide to Taktsang Monastery

Taktsang Palphug Monastery — universally known as Tiger’s Nest — is Bhutan’s most sacred site and the image that defines the country for most visitors. Clamped to a sheer cliff at 3,120 metres above the Paro valley floor, it was built in 1692 around a cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated for three months in the 8th century. The hike to reach it is a pilgrimage route walked by Bhutanese people for over 1,300 years.

Stage 1: Trailhead to Cafeteria Viewpoint (1.5 to 2 hours up)
The trail begins through blue pine and rhododendron forest on a well-maintained stone path. Altitude gain is steady but not steep. At the cafeteria viewpoint (approximately 2,900m), the monastery appears for the first time across the gorge — the best photograph of the day. The cafeteria serves Bhutanese tea, snacks and lunch. Most people pause here for 20 to 30 minutes.
Stage 2: Cafeteria to Monastery (45 minutes to 1 hour)
From the cafeteria, the trail descends 150m into the gorge — passing a beautiful waterfall — before climbing back up to the monastery entrance on the far side. This is the most physically demanding section: steep stone steps, often damp, with significant exposure on the cliff face. The final approach crosses a wooden bridge above the gorge.
Inside the Monastery
The complex contains nine temples built into and around the cliff face. Visitors are permitted to enter the main lhakhangs (temple halls) during regular visiting hours. Photography is not permitted inside the monastery buildings. The central shrine is built around Guru Rinpoche’s cave — monks perform daily puja rituals here; visitors are welcome to sit quietly and observe.
