Bhutan Camping Adventure

10 nights under Himalayan stars in remote campsites | Trek through rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and high passes | Camp beside glacial lakes with mountain reflections | Wildlife watching: blue sheep, Himalayan griffon, barking deer | Full professional camping crew(cook, horse handlers, assistant guide) | Experience the complete wilderness of western Bhutan away from roads and lodges

The Bhutan Camping Adventure is designed for those who want to experience the kingdom’s landscape from the inside: sleeping under Himalayan skies, waking to mountain birdsong, and moving through terrain that most tourists never reach. Over ten days, the tour combines trekking in the high alpine zones around Paro and Thimphu with overland exploration of the Punakha and Wangdue valleys, with camping throughout as the primary accommodation mode.

Camping in Bhutan is a fundamentally different experience from camping elsewhere. Your full support crew (cook, camp manager, and pack horse handlers) travel ahead to each campsite, setting up your tent, dining tent, and kitchen before you arrive. Dinner is served in the dining tent at a proper table, with a multi-course meal prepared on a portable kitchen that somehow produces extraordinary food in the middle of nowhere. The Bhutanese approach to trekking camp cuisine is genuinely impressive: fresh vegetables from valley farms, local rice, traditional dishes alongside Western comfort food, and always hot milk tea or butter tea waiting when you reach camp.

The trekking sections combine high-altitude ridges (up to 4,200m on the Druk Path) with lower forest trails through broadleaf woodland and river valleys. Cultural site visits are woven into the itinerary between trekking days: Punakha Dzong, village temple visits in Wangdue, and the extraordinary Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten reached via a walk through Punakha’s rice paddies. The camping adventure suits those who want an active, outdoors-focused Bhutan experience without the extended commitment of a dedicated trekking tour.

Maximum group size is eight, ensuring the camping experience remains intimate and the trekking sections feel genuinely wild. All equipment is provided; you need bring only your personal gear. This is Bhutan at its most alive, felt through the feet and lungs and the particular quality of silence that exists only at altitude.

Day 1: Arrival in Paro

Arrive in Paro and meet your camping team. Equipment check and fitting. Trek briefing and route overview. Final hotel night before the adventure begins. Team dinner.

Day 2: Paro Valley to Drukgyel Campsite (2,800m)

Trek north from Paro through farmland and forest past Drukgyel Dzong, the ruined fortress that once guarded the route to Tibet. First campsite in a clearing above the valley with views back toward Paro.

Day 3: Drukgyel to Soi Yaksa (3,870m) Steady ascent through blue pine and fir forest into the upper valley. The vegetation thins as you gain altitude. Camp at Soi Yaksa in open high pastures with the first big mountain views.

Day 4: Soi Yaksa to Jangothang (4,040m)

Final approach to the base camp beneath Jomolhari. The mountain reveals itself progressively as the valley narrows. Arrive at Jangothang camp, one of Bhutan’s finest mountain campsites beside a glacial lake.

Day 5: Jangothang Acclimatisation and Exploration

Rest day at 4,040m. Morning hike to a ridge above camp for views of Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and the Tibetan plateau. Blue sheep grazing close to camp. Afternoon rest and camp games. Star-gazing from 4,000m.

Day 6: Jangothang to Thombu Shong (4,380m)

Trek north into the high yak pastures of the upper valley. Cross into a vast open plateau at 4,380m. Camp at Thombu Shong in complete wilderness, no other trekkers, no villages, just mountains and sky.

Day 7: Thombu Shong High Day

Optional summit of a trekking peak above camp for panoramic views of the Bhutan-Tibet border range. Alternative: full rest day at altitude with wildlife watching and photography.

Day 8: Thombu Shong to Lingshi (4,166m)

Cross the high Tshophu Lakes area and descend to Lingshi. Visit Lingshi Dzong, a remarkable fortress in a completely remote setting. Camp below the dzong with expansive valley views.

Day 9: Lingshi to Chebisa (3,880m)

Descend through alpine meadows to Chebisa village. Stone farmhouses, prayer flags, and blue sheep visible on the slopes above. Final high mountain camp.

Day 10: Chebisa to Shana (2,870m)

Long descending day back through the gorge scenery of the lower valley. Vegetation returns rapidly as altitude drops. Camp at Shana for the final night under the stars.

Day 11: Shana to Paro (Celebration Dinner)

Final trek back to Paro. Hot shower at your hotel. Celebration dinner with your full trekking crew. Overnight in Paro hotel.
